Endeavouring to make modern history

The Queenslander, a wooden house on stumps surrounded by verandahs and lattice with straight through halls and corridors, and was often capped by a pyramid shaped red tin roof. It created a unique lifestyle and helped shape the Queensland character. The outdoor, leisurely way of life in sub tropical Australia.

Unlike the majority of Brisbane properties this 1920’s farmhouse does not carry a million dollar price tag. In fact the current owners of this Hamilton house would of paid as little as $10 for it. Not only does Grace cottage carry more than 80 years of history it was one of Endeavour’s prize homes.

The house was renovated by long term Endeavour and Finlayson supporters Waratah Homes and features several outdoor entertaining areas, fully appointed kitchen, clawfoot bath, fire place and media room – (yes, a media room) three bedrooms and three bathrooms.

A far cry from the Queenslander’s of yesteryear.

An extraordinary transformation from typical Queenslander to a home marked by touches of moderism, key furnishing and thoughtful decorating.

The brief was uncomplicated: to create a modern family home that retained the elegance of traditional Queenslander but delivered the home comforts of today.

The house was raised and built in underneath whilst the top section has been extensively remodelled.

All the original structural work from the 1920’s farmhouse has been retained and restored to its former glory.

The interior of the home has been reinvigorated extensively with the use of Finlaysons products also seen on the exterior surroundings. The list includes Envirowood timber windows and doors, architraves, skirtings, timber cornices, belt rails, post moulds, handrails, frieze slats, heritage archways, breezeways, fanlites, electrical mould, barge boards, verandah brackets and v.j. panelling.

When asked why the use of Finlayson’s products Kym Parks Managing Director of Waratah Homes explains:

"We have a long standing relationship with Finlayson’s – actually over 14 years. They offer the complete range of traditional products - some that they have manufactured for over 130 years. It is easy for us to find exactly what we are after. The team at Finlayson’s are competitive, offer great advice and great service."

To the passing observer, this Queenslander frontage doesn’t indicate the vast space inside. Rather, from the entry a hallway leads off into the study and master bedroom then opens up into a living area, dining area kitchen and deck. The kitchen then leads downstairs into the hub of the home the family room, with bedroom 2 and 3, bathroom, laundry and patio.

The upper level provides the escape and provides a grown up area. Throughout the home, the use of timber scintillates against the cream, white and buttercup colour scheme.

Wilma Burton Lotteries manager Endeavour Prize Homes continues, "Waratah Homes was crucial to the success of this Endeavour Prize home. We have been associated with Waratah Homes for over 10 years.

It is important for Endeavour to maintain high standards and meet expectations and Waratah have delivered that time and time again."

The result is a house that really does feel like it is somebody’s home – one that is enriched by history, renovated with precision and touch by today.
